What to do in Budapest

Budapest is a vibrant city with a long list of activities you can do, rather than list every single thing there is I will pick my top 5.

1. Take a trip up to Liberty statue (Szabadság szobor)

Now we took the scenic route up to the top, there is a road so feel free to catch a cab. If you do want to go here I highly recommend the walk, but be warned there are a lot of stairs and up hill ramps. Once at the top there line of food carts which sell one of my favorite Hungarian treats, Chimney cakes. This journey is all about the view. That is actually how I got the picture above.

2. Visit the House of Houdini museum

The Houdini museum wasn’t a massive display, but it was amazing seeing all of the history and famous apparatuses he used for his tricks. Outside of the building show large illusions, like his famous water torture escape. To top it off there is a short 15 minute magic show held in a small theater. (once you leave the museum if you head to your right you can catch a captivating view and some old ruins)

4. Tour St. Stephen’s Basilica

St. Stephens Basilica is a masterpiece of art and architecture. It is the largest church in Budapest and it was built in honor of Hungary’s first king St. Stephen. Not only was the church built for him, it actually contains his mummified right hand. Now being that this place is so popular, they do not have a revolving door. You have to wait outside and groups are brought in to walk around and see the inside.

3. Take a dip in the baths

Now there are many bath houses in Budapest, it is almost a staple of the city. Personally I went to Gellert Baths which was an amazing experience. It was my first time ever going to a bath house and I think I would go again. Now they have multiple levels you can pay for, I went with the basic plan, but if you are looking for the full spa experience that can be done.

5. Visit the Museum of Terror

The Museum of Terror is not a light hearted event, It is a tour through a very dark history. This building does not only contain the artifacts of the past, but it was actually used to hold and torture prisoners. The underground halls show the real cells and stair wells these people had to live in. The stair well being quite important and you will find out why if you take a visit. Budapest survived 2 terror regimes and this museum pays respect to those who suffered through it.
